Starbucks, the renowned American coffee chain, had to adhere to strict regulations set by the Kyoto Council to establish its presence in the historic Higashiyama district. Starbucks Kyoto Ninenzaka Yasaka Chaya is a unique addition to the brand’s global portfolio.
Where to find it.
Tucked away in the picturesque streets, this Starbucks is a hidden gem, housed in a traditional Japanese structure that adds to its charm. It’s strategically positioned on the Ninenzaka pathway, which leads to the iconic Kiyomizu-Dera, a must-visit attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Specials rules
Once you’ve placed your order at the counter, softly illuminated by a paper lantern, you’ll proceed down a long corridor to the bar counter.
The stairways and passages in traditional Japanese houses are very narrow, making it difficult for people carrying coffee to pass one another. Therefore, the shop requires that you use them in only one direction from the time you enter until you leave.
You will find many small salons on the second floor, some with tatami floors. Before sitting on some cushions, you will have to remove your shoes.
My honest opinion.
Charming place indeed, but the victim of his popularity, you should come at the opening hour on a non-rainy day. I love relaxing by reading a good book in coffee shops, and I find it challenging to deal with dim lights and crowded rooms.
I am a collection freak, and I only went there to get my hands on the Kyoto destination card.
